Richard was born in Nottingham on 13th March 1933 and was educated at Southwell Minster School, Nottinghamshire where he was a choral scholar. In 1949 he joined the family clockmaking business, G & F Cope & Co. and completed his apprenticeship in 1954. Subsequently he was called up for National Service and commissioned into the R.E.M.E. When he rejoined the family firm in 1956 he decided since his older brother, David, was running the manufacturing side of the business, he would develop the retail jewellery business. He trained with Croydons of Ipswich and following that he worked for Gubelin, Lucerne, Switzerland where he also studied gemmology and gained his fellowship of the G.A. He took over Cope Jewellers in 1958 and set about using his recent experience to take the business forward. His daughter, Susan, joined the business in 1979 and son, Andrew, joined in 1985. Granddaughter Hannah is now the 6th generation of the family in the business. He was actively involved with the National Association of Jewellers, becoming Chairman 1974-76 and President 1993-95. He held all the offices of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and was elected Master in 1993 as well as serving as President of the British Horological Institute. He was passionate about cricket and played for his village club, Plumtree, for many years. He was also a keen supporter of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, active as a committee member and serving as President 2000-2002. He was an enthusiastic traveller and particularly loved the South of France and Cornwall. He married in 1959, Muriel Jean Foster who predeceased him. He is survived by his partner Margaret Harris and also by children from his marriage Andrew, Susan and Jonathan and grandchildren Matthew, Hannah, Thomas, Solomon and Levin.
